Overview

Drywall Texture Matching engineered for Illinois

A patch that stands out is worse than the damage it replaced. We match existing textures - knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, or smooth - so repairs read as part of the original wall.
  • Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, and smooth
  • Careful test samples before final application
  • Blending into existing textures
  • Prep for paint so the repair disappears
What sets us apart

Why homeowners and GCs choose our drywall texture matching

01

Every common residential texture

Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, splatter, hand-troweled swirl, stipple, and smooth (Level 5). We match all of them.

02

Sample-first workflow

We spray or trowel test samples on scrap or a hidden section first, adjust the pattern, then apply to your wall. No guess-and-repaint.

03

Blended edges

The hard part isn't matching the texture - it's blending the patch edge into the existing texture so the transition disappears. We feather compound wide and blend texture into the surrounding area.

04

Correct primers and paint prep

New texture over patched compound needs the right primer for consistent paint absorption. We spec and apply the right one.

05

Vintage and hand-applied textures

Older homes often have hand-troweled or unique textures that spray guns can't replicate. We hand-trowel to match when needed.

06

Full-wall or ceiling re-texture

When matching an old texture isn't practical (very unique or degraded), we can re-texture the entire surface for a consistent look.

Why texture matching is harder than it looks

Every sprayed texture is a combination of variables: compound consistency (how much water is added), spray pressure at the gun, orifice size, distance from wall, sweep speed, and - for knockdown - how long you wait before you flatten it with a trowel. Miss any one of those and your patch stands out. Hand-troweled textures add another layer: pattern direction, trowel size, compound stickiness. We take reference photos and hand samples, mock up on scrap, dial the variables in, and only then apply to your wall.

The three most common Illinois textures

Knockdown: sprayed splatter of thinned compound left to set for 10-20 minutes, then flattened lightly with a wide trowel. The most common ceiling and wall texture in homes built 1985-2010 in this region. Orange peel: sprayed splatter of thinned compound left untouched - fine pattern that looks like the skin of an orange. Common on commercial and production residential walls. Smooth (Level 5): no texture at all, just a fully skimmed and sanded surface. Increasingly the preference in high-end residential and modern remodels.

Vintage and unusual textures

Homes built before 1980 often have hand-troweled textures - Santa Fe, skip trowel, swirl, stipple, or unique regional variants applied with brushes or brooms. These can't be replicated with a spray gun. We hand-trowel to match, using the same tools and technique the original applicator used. It takes longer but it's the only way to make a repair disappear on these walls.

When to re-texture vs. match

If a wall is mostly repaired (more than 30-40% new drywall) or if the existing texture is inconsistent or degraded, re-texturing the whole wall or ceiling is often the smarter call than trying to match a big patch into a bad texture. We'll be honest about which option gives you a better result - matching a big patch into an already-uneven wall often ends up more visible than a fresh consistent texture on the whole surface.

Paint prep after texture matching

New compound and texture absorb primer and paint differently than old painted surfaces. Without proper priming, the patch can "flash" - show up as a duller or shinier area under paint. We prime new texture with a compatible bonding primer so the whole wall accepts finish paint uniformly. Skipping this step is why some patches show up under paint even when the texture itself matched perfectly.

Methodology

How a drywall texture matching project runs with our crew

01

Assessment & photos

We take reference photos and note texture type, pattern density, and any variations across the wall.

02

Sample & dial in

Test samples on scrap or a hidden area. Adjust spray pressure, consistency, and technique until it matches.

03

Apply & blend

Texture applied to patch and feathered into surrounding area so the transition edge disappears.

04

Prime & inspect

Bonding primer applied, then wall inspected under raking light to confirm the patch disappears.

Frequently Asked

Drywall Texture Matching - answered

How much does texture matching cost?

+

Texture matching is usually part of a broader repair scope rather than a standalone line item. For repairs where matching is the challenging part (unique or vintage textures), expect the texture work to add 20-40% to the base repair cost - worth it, because a repair with wrong texture looks worse than no repair at all.

Can you match any texture?

+

Any standard residential texture (knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, smooth) - yes. Vintage hand-troweled or unusual regional textures - usually yes with hand application, though very unique patterns may require re-texturing the whole surface for the cleanest result. We're honest during the estimate about which approach will look best.

Do I need to repaint the whole wall after a textured repair?

+

For visible walls under critical light, yes - we recommend repainting to the nearest corner or natural break at minimum, because even a perfect texture match can show a very slight color difference where new primer meets old paint. For less-visible walls, spot painting can work if you have the original paint.

How do I know what texture is on my walls?

+

Send us photos or we'll identify on our site visit. Knockdown has a splattered-then-flattened look with visible flat spots. Orange peel is a fine bumpy pattern with no flat areas. Skip trowel is hand-applied with visible trowel marks. Smooth is just flat. We'll tell you which you have when we quote.

Can you re-texture an entire room?

+

Yes - full-room re-texture is often the right call when the existing texture is inconsistent, degraded, or you're doing extensive repairs. We can also remove existing texture and finish smooth (Level 5) if that's the look you want.

How long does texture drying take before painting?

+

Sprayed texture is usually dry to touch in 30-60 minutes and ready for primer in 4-8 hours depending on humidity. Full cure and paint-ready is typically next day. Rushing paint over damp texture causes adhesion problems.

Do you handle asbestos-containing textures?

+

Textures from before roughly 1980 may contain asbestos. We don't remove asbestos-containing material ourselves - we can arrange testing, and if the material tests positive we coordinate with a certified abatement contractor for the removal before we come in to re-texture.

Does Illinois weather affect drywall work?

+

Yes. Lake-effect humidity swings, freeze/thaw cycles, and dry winter forced-air heat all move drywall subtly. We plan panel acclimation, use appropriate joint compounds for the season, and time coats so seams don't crack when your house cycles from 65% summer humidity to 20% winter humidity.

Why do some patches still show even when the texture matches?

+

Usually paint absorption - new compound absorbs primer and paint differently than old painted surfaces, so even matched texture can "flash" (show up as slightly different sheen) without proper priming. We use bonding primer on all texture matches to prevent this.

Can you match texture on ceilings as well as walls?

+

Yes - ceilings are actually the most common surface we texture-match on, since they're the most common location for water damage repairs, popcorn removal followed by knockdown, and other patching work.
